8 Reasons To Get Excited About Moving to Glasgow!

Moving to a new city or starting at a new university can be quite daunting but also very exciting! Here are 8 reasons to get excited about moving to Glasgow (even during these unusual times we are living in)...

1. People Make Glasgow.

This is the city slogan which says it all. Glasgow’s inhabitants both local and foreign love to live up to that reputation and celebrate its status as one of the world’s most friendly cities. Even the shyest people make friends! Whether it's from your course, your accommodation or from taking up a new sport or hobby - you are sure to meet some nice people!

2. Glasgow Named Best City To Live & Work In.

Glasgow was named the best city to live and work in according to research by credit rating company Totally Money (2019) - “Millennials seek locations that are fun, forward-thinking and affordable.” The research looked at 63 UK cities and assessed them on various aspects including job opportunities, the cost of living, property prices and leisure activities/entertainment.

3. The Great Outdoors.

Not only do you have the likes of Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow Green, The Botanic Gardens, Pollok Park plus many more green spaces within the city itself, Glasgow has great transport links to everywhere else in Scotland. There is literally an abundance of hills to climb, forests to explore, seaside promenades to stroll and many other outdoor activities to do from tree-top adventures to snowboarding and skiing in winter months. The views are truly stunning all year round, especially the highlands which are often described as magical.

4. The Food.

If you love food, you’ll love Glasgow. There are hundreds of fantastic restaurants, cafes, bars and street food serving delicious food from around the world at affordable prices. There are also regular food festivals and events! Many also offer a student discount – especially in the West End and around the universities.

5. The Best Universities.

Home to some of the best University Schools on Earth, Glasgow is an International city welcoming students from all around the globe. The University of Glasgow is in the top 1% of Universities in the World and holds a close resemblance to Hogwarts with its stunning Gothic architecture. University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University and The Glasgow Art School also rank highly in the league tables and between them all produce world-class academics, leaders, entrepreneurs, creatives and teachers. It will certainly look good on your CV/Resume to have studied here!

6. Scotway House.

OK, forgive us but we just can’t help but shout about our fantastic student accommodation in Glasgow! Scotway House is next to the Riverside Museum, opposite Partick Train Station in the fantastic West End of the city. With new and spacious en-suite rooms, studios and apartments, Scotway House also has an entire three-storey building attached to the main accommodation block with a gym, laundry, plenty of cool yet comfortable seating areas, a games area, roof terrace, study booths, mini trust shop and garden courtyards. The award-winning building is beautifully designed with amazing interiors, greenery and stylish lighting throughout. It was even listed as one of the top “most instagrammable” student accommodations in the UK by MyStudentHalls. We also have a fantastic and friendly team available 24/7. You can have a further look at our beloved student residence here.

7. Art Galleries, Exhibitions & Museums.

The iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has works from Monet, Van Gogh, Salvador Dali and many more famous and local artists. The museum part also has a fantastic collection including artefacts from ancient Egypt. You can spend a full day at Kelvingrove and still find new treasures every time you visit. The building itself is a remarkable piece of Spanish Baroque style architecture. It’s free to enter, as are most museums in Scotland. There are always interesting exhibitions to see throughout the city including the incredible and lesser-known Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. The street art is also impressive! We recommend checking Facebook Events, The List, The Skinny and What’s On Glasgow to see what is coming up.

8. Shopping.

Independent boutiques, high street brands to quality designers - Glasgow is renowned for its shopping and possibly second only to London in the UK (but much easier to travel around!) Clothes, shoes, make-up, interiors, technology, unique presents – Glasgow has it all and welcomes visitors from all over who love to shop!

You will be made very welcome in Glasgow, and if you are staying at Scotway House the team are excited to meet you!
